In the Garden…
So my time in Germany is coming to the end, which although I am very happy about this I think the experience hasn’t been totally a waste of my time. Least I know I can live in a foreign country for 5 months and actually survive. But for sure I think I missed home alot but this surely can’t be a bad thing. I just love everyone alot and they are apart of my life and spending so long without them has clearly been tough,
But I have realised I have only really blogged about my travelling and not my actual work, this is mainly because although I came up the concept in the first few weeks here, I have only really intense to the work ethic to the end (mainly making the most of being in a different country)
For this project I decided to use a afternoon in the garden to be the focus of my work and research.
I drew insects I found and decided to research from there finding exciting images, but always concentrating on my original drawings as this was what i wanted to use my personal experience instead of images found.
I started sampling with different techniques of knit, fairisle applique and embroidary onto knit, after sampling I thought about what i had previously liked in research and realised that I loved ‘Yarn bombing’ and thought this is a brilliant opportunity to use this idea and see if its something i will continue onto with final year.
For this I decided to create insects. on a back ground of natural wool

here is a photo of me knitting my background

Here is my ants I made using a ball pattern and tubular knit for the limbs.

here I have started to put the ants on the knitted background and created grass, using the chain stitch in crochet and also using tubular knit (2-6) stitches casted on.

The ants are finished surrounded with knitted grass

I have made a flower creating petal shapes and sewing them individually onto the background.

Here is a close up of my knit.
I think it has worked really well similar to yarn bombing and also I think it looks great against the plain background leaving it to focus on the textures of the grass, ants and flower. I think this has turned out really well and this is definitely something I may have to look into creating in my final year.
Overall a success.
I have also done a collar project but photos of that are soon to follow as yet to do a photo shoot.
